What is PCOS?
Sometimes a word is familiar but we don't know the details about it. Similarly, there are many questions about what PCOS is. The word 'poly' means many and the word 'polycystic' means many cysts. It is a hormonal disease. The main feature of PCOS is that the egg is not released from the uterus. Small cysts are formed around the ovaries when the amount of male hormone i.e. androgen hormone in the body of girls increases more than normal. As a result, the egg that is supposed to be released from the ovary becomes obstructed and at one point the release of the egg stops. And then various problems like irregular periods, infertility, and diabetes appear. The disease usually occurs in women of reproductive age (18-44 years).
Symptoms by which PCOS manifestly
Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome experience several symptoms. For example-
1) Irregular menstruation
Irregular periods or period problems are most common in PCOS. The normal period duration is usually 21-35 days. But if this disease occurs 2/3 months consecutive period. That is, a woman with this problem may have less than nine periods in a year. Again after a long period, abnormally excessive blood is seen to flow. At least 50 percent of women who experience this problem are overweight.
2) Ovarian abnormalities
Some women may have enlarged ovaries and follicles around the eggs. Due to this, the ovaries cannot function regularly.
3) Skin pigmentation
In the case of PCOS, pigmentation occurs in different parts of the patient's body. There are dark spots, especially on the back of the neck, and armpits. Many people suffer from discomfort due to these scars.
4) Weight gain
The weight and BMI (Body Mass Index calculator) of girls suffering from this disease are much higher than normal. A BMI of 25-30 is considered overweight and more than 30 is considered obese. At least 50 percent of women with PCOS are obese. In their case, the period does not occur without taking medicine. Sometimes excessive weight loss can cause this problem. So it is important to consult a doctor.
5) Increased acne problems
If you have PCOS, there is an excess of androgen hormones. Due to this, the skin produces more oil. From this, small pimples appear all over the face. The face of this type of acne is slightly swollen. Apart from the face, the back and chest can also suddenly show a lot of acne.
6) Unwanted hair growth and hair loss
High levels of the male hormone androgens can cause various physical symptoms. Sometimes excess hair (hirsutism) occurs on the face and on different parts of the body like the chest, abdomen, and inner thighs. Apart from this, problems like hair fall increase and hair become thinner. Many may experience male pattern baldness.

Having PCOS makes it difficult to conceive because the ovulation cycle is irregular. If pregnancy is possible with this disease, the risk of miscarriage increases. PCOS is also one of the causes of infertility. If obese patients with this disease can reduce their weight by 5 percent, then their periods will start to become regular. And if the weight can be reduced by 10 percent, the function of the ovaries will be normal and the problem of infertility will be reduced a lot.
